Kapuso Soul Balladeer Garrett Bolden adds a new flavor to the iconic song “Kung Malaya Lang Ako.”
Composed by the award-winning Vehnee Saturno, the heartfelt song was originally performed by Kris Lawrence and is about a person yearning to be free to love someone again. This time under GMA Music, Garrett gives a fresh rendition of the song which delves beyond matters of love and pertains to the freedom we long for in life.
Garrett conveyed his excitement in releasing this song, “When they told me na kakantahin ko yung ‘Kung Malaya Lang Ako,’ nauna pong pumasok sa isip ko ‘yung excitement about it lalo na it’s a song na I’ve been singing before. It’s nice to bring another flavor to it at iparinig sa bagong generation na there’s this song na ang ganda ng pagkagawa at pagkasulat. So parang ikinuwento ko lang po ulit ‘yung story ng song na ito.”
He further explained the difference between his rendition and the original, “‘Yung original version po is a bit of strong ballad, R&B siya, ‘di ba, so ‘yung sa ‘kin po nilagyan ko ng medyo modern sound. Hinaluan ko po ng ganung feels. I think ‘pag narinig ito ng mga Kapuso natin it would give a different touch and a different feel. I did not change a lot when it comes sa melody ng kanta pero ‘yung tunog, ‘yun ‘yung medyo binago ko.”
Garrett openly discussed the challenges he encountered during the revival process, shedding light on the strategies he did to overcome them.
“Challenging po ‘yung time na wala pang music or wala pa ‘yung final product. Since it’s one of the songs that I took inspiration before sa pagkanta, I asked myself how do I make it sound na sa akin ‘yung song this time? Then naging collaborative lang po ako with GMA Music. Talagang naging hands on kami, with the help of the arrangers, Sir Paulo Agudelo, and ‘yung buong GMA Music, when it comes to how we want it to sound.”
